MI wants to quit music for acting? GOH!

What's all these talk about MI quitting music for acting? I say it's BS. I hope it's BS! Dear lord, let it be BS!

Conflicting and confusing reports coming in from Abuja has it that Mister Incredible, M.I, the premier artist of CHOCOLATE CITY MUSIC has thrown the rank and file of the record label into confusion by announcing that he wants to pursue a career in the movies.

As it is now, he may already even taken part in a film production because we immediately called him to confirm and this is what he said:“I think it’s about time for me to try something else and acting is something I’ve always had a passion for and I think it’s time for me to explore that area. I know my fans will love my new movie coming out and although this may not be final, I will no longer be doing music for the time being.”

As far-fetched as this may sound for a rapper who quickly rose to the top of Nigerian music scene with just one album in the space of one year, close sources to CHOCOLATE CITY MUSIC where he and his brother Jesse Jags and Ice Prince are signed on are saying that M.I actually put this request in writing. A call to Mr. Audu Maikori, the head honcho of the Abuja-based label, didn’t fully clear the air because while he didn’t outrightly dismiss the story he admitted that M.I has actually requested that the November release date for his sophomore album, M.I 2, be shifted indefinitely for the meantime. Further questions as to whether M.I would be fully quitting the label went unreplied.

M.I who first came to limelight in 2008 with the release of his debut album, TALK ABOUT IT, has been on top of his game and emerged as arguably the best rapper in the country. He is also the highest ranking Nigerian rapper in the recently released MNET AFRICA list of the ten best African rappers. He is widely respected in the Nigerian music industry and legend has it that TALK ABOUT IT sold 30 000 copies in the first 30 minutes of its release in 2008. He has also won numerous awards with it.

Oh no!!! No more free music in Naija from Oct 1 - as COSON engages accounting firm for full copyright licensing.

Mr Chinedu Chukwuji, COSON Acting General Manager; Chief Tony Okoroji, COSON Chairman; Mr. Kehinde Oyeleke, Managing Partner

Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), the nation’s sole government approved collective management organization for musical works and sound recordings has announced that come October 1, 2010, the era of free music on Nigerian air waves and in public places will be gone forever. The announcement was made by COSON Chairman, Chief Tony Okoroji, at the Boardroom of the society in Lagos during the signing of a royalty collection agreement between COSON and Olusola Adekanola & Co, one of the nation’s foremost indigenous firms of chartered accountants.
The implication of the new regime is that from October 1 all broadcast media organisations, hotels, restaurants, event venues, advertising companies, banks, telecoms establishments, airlines, road transporters, oil companies and such other enterprises in Nigeria which use music in any way to aid their operations will be made to comply with the Copyright Act or face legal consequences.
Omo wahala has sheled...who will agree to pay? Ko ma funny o!
Can this work in Nigeria?

By the agreement, the skills and resources of the two organizations are being aggregated to ensure that starting October 1, no organization using music in a commercial setting or in public anywhere in Nigeria is allowed to do so without the payment of copyright royalties as required by law. According to Okoroji, “Since the government approval of COSON in May, we have engaged the key users of music in continuous dialogue. We have taken the COSON Stakeholders’ Forum around the country and used different media to discuss the issues with all concerned. We did not jump on anyone neither did we harass anyone. We have been very professional about our mandate. The time has finally come for everyone to do their duty. We have respected the users of music. We expect them to reciprocate that respect. Any of them that is not licensed by October 1 may be attracting sanctions from us or will be exposed to the full weight of the other tools in our tool box”
The firm of Olusola Adekanola & Co is very well known in Nigeria when it comes to revenue collection. The firm pioneered the nation-wide Accelerated Revenue Generation Programme (ARGP) which has helped governments across the country to recover billions of Naira owed them in tax revenues. For several years, they have been one of the nation’s top accounting firms.
At the agreement signing ceremony during the week, Chief Okoroji said that the choice of Olusola Adekanola & Co for the COSON assignment was based on the firm’s proven capacity to deliver. He said that their mandate is to use their nationwide infrastructure to reach every nook and cranny of Nigeria and collect the money due to long suffering Nigerian copyright owners. He added that beyond the collection of revenue, COSON is very mindful of the prudent, professional and transparent management of the copyright royalties collected so that at the end of the day the real copyright owners are not short changed. Said Okoroji, “It’s a watershed event that COSON has as partner one of the most celebrated accounting firms in Nigeria to ensure robust enforcement of the Copyright Act. The transparent management of the funds that will arise from this partnership is critical. We don’t want any stories told about the money collected. It must get to the copyright owners accurately. We are stoutly determined to do a good job in the interest of all the stakeholders in the Nigerian music industry”

The Acting General-Manager of COSON, Mr. Chinedu Chukwuji, described the signing ceremony as “the dawn of a new day for the entire Nigerian music industry”. According to him, the agreement signing ceremony showed that COSON was “ready to deliver the dividends of creativity to rights owners, across the country and beyond,”
The Managing Partner of Olusola Adekanola & Co., Mr. Kehinde Oyeleke, said his company was aware of the enormity of the assignment and as such would put all hands on deck. “We feel excited and challenged. We know expectations are very high and we will give it our best”, Oyeleke said. He promised that his company will carry out its duties diligently, professionally and conscientiously, within the provisions of the law.

Charly Boy's Battle of the Gifted holds.

The 2010 edition of the Charlyboy show-live came up with a new concept tagged Battle of the Gifted. It was a battle targeted at discovering new talents into the entertainment Industry as young but talented Nigerians battle it out in the boxing ring. At the end of the talent hunt held a month before the event, ten finalists emerged for the final contest at the International Conference Centre to showcase their arts. The show held August 29, 2010.

Charly Grandpapa...looking great at 57

The most incredible achievement of my life is: Being Charly Boy. Playing Charly Boy. Hiding under Charly Boy. Getting away with stuffs in the name of Charly Boy. With that Charly Boy toga, being able to get into the worst situation, the most dangerous situation, being able to manipulate myself out of it. If you take Charly Boy to Ajegunle, I'm sure he will be the Area Father. If you flip the coin, and you take Charly Boy to Buckingham Palace, I'm sure his etiquette will exude that of a high pedigree. So, the most successful thing I've done is Charly Boy.

About P Square

Peter & Paul Okoye popularly known as P-Square are a set of identical twins that live in Lagos. They are natives of Anambra State and are currently studying Business Administration at the University of Abuja. Hard-work and determination are the watch word that got them where they are today.
They were discovered by Bayo Odusami (Howie T.) of Adrot Studios at the Gold and Tones "Grab da Mic" competition in Jos and ever since they have being under the management of Adrot Studios. Peter is the choreographer of all their dance routines. He also plays the acoustic guitar, bass guitar and drums while Paul plays the keyboard and does all their production and sequencing. Their kind of Music is Afocentric Hiphop and R&B spiced up with choreography.

Call them the current rave of Nigerias hip-hop scene, you would not be far from the truth. Sensational twins, Peter and Paul Okoye a.k.a P-Square have no doubt kept the countrys entertainment scene busy since they released the smash hit, Bizzy Body. The group popular for its electrifying stage presence, amazing dance steps, and funky costumes, would easily remind you of American pop star, Michael Jackson and the later generations of Bobby Brown and Usher Raymond.
The group, managed by the eldest in the family, Jude Engeen Okoye, has not only come to stay but is setting a new direction for Nigerias hip-hop scene. Speaking with Daily Sun, the duo, who hail from Anambra State alongside their manager speak on the groups evolution, its strength, challenges and why they change their telephone numbers every week.
How we started

Peter: It all began about 12 years ago. Then, we were into dance before we added music. We started by dancing at parties. At that time, we used to imitate Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, Usher Raymond and all that.

On the long run, we started doing movie sound tracks. The sound tracks lasted for sometime. At a point, people started telling us to sing. There was a day we went to a party, people were expecting us to dance but Paul and I sang one of our movie sound tracks. The people were astounded. However, our breakthrough came when Benson &Hedges had a talent hunt competition in 2001/2002 in Jos, featuring about 37 contestants. We took the first position and we went for the regional competition in Abuja in the same year and we won. At the grand finale here in Lagos, we also won the competition. In 2002, they took us for a road show. We covered about 13 states. By 2002, we released our first album. It did well because three months after, we were nominated for the KORA awards. Although we didnt win, it was a plus.

This time around, we are out with our second album. So, we decided to go it all alone. We moved down to Lagos six months ago and we decided to repackage - the management, record label and other things.
Growing up
Peter: It was okay but stressful. Our dad didnt give us his full support, but our mum did. My mum owns a Christian ministry, so people criticise her for allowing her sons to play music. But today, things have changed. Growing up I will say was tough.

Paul : It was not as if we are from a rich family. It wasnt easy because we were into music and at the same time schooling. But we still thank God. Tolerating each other

Peter : There were difficult times. We argue, we quarrel and all that. We also exchange ideas. Its just that Paul has some things which I dont have and I have some things he does not have. As for the music, Paul handles about 60 percent while I do 40. As regards the stagecraft, he handles forty while I do the 60. We do things together, even the writing of songs. But he handles much of that.

The unexpected

Peter: I didnt expect the whole thing to turn out this big. I was just expecting the usual plaything. But today, everything has changed.

Paul: I wasn't looking at music as a big thing too. I had always wanted to see myself like an entrepreneur thatll own a production company. I only saw music as a tool that will give me what I want. Before we knew it, music had become the number one thing. Now look at what we are doing. Initially, we saw ourselves working in an office.

Success

Jude: In term of success, it is very obvious. Just in about four months that we released the album, our fame has continued to soar. Presently, we can boast of two cars, a house and all that. We are going places. We are getting offers. For example, we are going to spend a greater part of this year outside the continent.

Problems/challenges

Jude: The only problem we are facing now is that some of our shows clash. The clients would come insisting on a particular date. Before they confirm the date, they would have started publicity for the show and all that. Before we know what is happening, two or more people have started paying for the same date at different locations. At the end of the day, you might start making enemies for yourself. P-Square is hot now and everybody wants us. The only advice we can give is that people should call and pay earlier.

Peter: I am not seeing it as a problem but people are seeing it as such. Since we always go for the high taste, we have to improve day-by-day. For example, we came out with good videos, so everything we do have to get better. Its more of challenges and we are facing lots of it. All eyes are on us. There are many of our fans that are saying we are making them proud of being Nigerians.

Paul: I have this personal problem, but I think I've solved it. It's my phone. It keeps ringing and ringing. Sometimes, I see myself as someone who doesnt need a phone. I used to own a number but I dropped it. My phone rings just anytime. People will call you and tell you their names. Then, they want you to always recognise them immediately they call you. They will call you and tell you to save their number. For Gods sake, they are too many and if you decline, they will say its because you are a star. I receive more than 500 calls everyday. So, when it started becoming a problem, I changed my line. As it occurred I changed again. I kept changing within the interval of weeks. The one Im using now, I changed it two weeks ago and somebody has started flashing me on it. So, I switch off my phone most of the time.

Elton Joh

Forty years ago Elton John toured the U.S. with his "idol", singer/songwriter and fellow keys banger Leon Russell. Described by John as "the one piano player and vocalist who influenced me more than anybody else", Russell had already established himself as a brilliant songwriter ("A Song for You", "Delta Lady" among many) but producer (Joe Cocker) and live performer as well, collaborating with the cream of early 70's rock royalty including George Harrison, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood. It's hard to imagine Elton making an albums such as Tumbleweed Connection withoutRussell's distinctive southern gospel, rock and blues/country style. He now honors Russell with The Union, a new collaborative project produced by T-Bone Burnett and featuring guests such as Neil Young, Brian Wilson and longtime lyricist BernieTaupin, arriving October 19 via Decca. It was, says John, a "humbling and moving experience."
“All I wanted for Leon,” John says, “is to have, in his later life, the accolades that seem to have been missing for him in the last 35 years. I want his name written in stone. I want him in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I want his name to be on everybody’s lips again, like it used to be. So we made this record.” With John, now 63, and Russell, 68 and in ill-health, it's to be expected that vocally the album would have some gruff and warbley elements to contend with. But these are two masters obviously enjoying themselves, focusing on exhibiting their craft and not pretending to be something they're not. Rootsy, tinged with soul and gospel styles, The Union is an old school testament to not only Russell but John as well, stepping up to acknowledge in word and deed the music that helped shape his own.
